What Makes a Successful Marriage

Hard to believe that my husband and I recently celebrated a 35th wedding anniversary.

I think the reason we have been successful is based on a few basic principles. Obviously the most important one would be love. We also respect each other and try our best to respect the other person and their prospective on things and to accept the fact that we can't always agree on every subject. In our particular situation, we started out as friends, we met as teenagers and had the sense to nuture that friendship throughout our teen years and did not get involved in any romantic way until we had been friends for over five years. Because of this friendship, we have been able to switch from being a married couple to best friends and could try and work out our differences thinking as friends and not as lovers. We have had our share of ups and downs, and who hasn't.

The difference is that we take the time to work things out, talk them out, sometimes until we are exhausted and in the end, try to find some sort of solution that the two of us feel comfortable enough to accept.

We truly beat the odds and the statistics. We married in our early twenties, had children within the first two years of our marriage and even was faced with unemployment not once or twice but three times which really tests even the most secure marriage. Through it all, we stuck together, trying our best to take things one day at a time. There were times when money was tight, but instead of fighting about it, we always would try and find some way to make ends meet.

Our children are married and we are blessed with grandchildren who we try to spoil every opportunity we get.

The years go by so quickly and life is so precious that you have to make the most out of it.

I chose to share it with my soulmate, who also happens to be my best friend, and surround myself with dear friends and my children and grandchildren.

We have supported each other through the good days and even the bad ones. We cherish our time together and don't sweat the little things. We realize how important family is and share our ideas and lives with our loved ones. We don't take anything for granted because life can change in a blink of an eye.

Live can be complicated but you have the power to live life to the fullest if you just enjoy the simple pleasures in life and take things one day at a time.
