My Wish for Independence Day!

Most of us will either be making or going to a BBQ and looking forward to another day off from work.
Do we think about what the true meaning of what the 4th of July really represents? I wonder! Yes, we can all say we are patriotic and take a moment of silence to think about brave soldiers who are fighting to protect our freedom and those who have lost their lives defending it as far back as the original Independence day during colonial times.
I also wonder what went wrong when the government must step in when our ecomony seems to be suffering due to greedy CEO's and businessman who have tried to cheat the system by drawing high salaries and rewarding themselves with a bonus after giving a pink slip to a loyal employee and then, claiming that their company is in trouble and needs to government to bail them out! When insurance companies continue to raise the cost of health insurance as well as homeowners, and car insurance claiming that they are loosing money.
I just don't understand how a small business is forced to close if they have financial difficulties and yet, other large cooperate companies cry and get money from the government without any plan for accountability so that they don't use the money for something other than fixing the problem they complain about.
The banks received money to hopefully help the crisis concerning bad loans that were made before the market dropped and yet, these banks do nothing to help out the struggling homeowner with trying to get them a more reasonable mortgage rate that will offer them some relief so instead of being forced out of their homes, they can make payments and continue to live in their homes. What good is that vacant house to the bank anyway?
When you think you have security in a job that you have worked at for years and finally one day you are told that business is bad and that you are terminated! What are you suppose to do next?
My definition of Independence Day would be the day when we finally wake up and make those accountable for their actions, the CEO's that literally stole money from companies, the banks that used the money given to give relief to the housing crisis for other means like purchasing another bank for personal gain and profit, for employers who try and get government relief concerning tax breaks when they clearly don't deserve it because they are not employing Americans and manufacturing out of the country to "save money". For insurance companies that constantly request price increases in a nation where many are unemployed and can't afford the insurance in the first place. The list goes on and on.

I don't believe our founding fathers had this kind of independence in mind when they wrote the constitution. 'good article"Dear David,I am sure our Fonding Father's are literally turning over in their gaves with the way the constitution has been manipulated.Maybe it is time for an state wide Boston Tea Party! Thanks for taking the time to comment on my article.Happy 4th of July!Iris
David,It is the setting up of the law of the land that enables us to recover "when our ecomony seems to be suffering." It is the seperation of powers, checks and balanecs, the Fed politically removed from Congress that enables this country to recover. It is politicians with their "term limit" mentality and not that of the long run that allows too little or too much regulation that causes economic downturn. But it is also the little man and woman who contribute as they did in taking on home loans they knew they couldn't pay. And job security is a thing of the past so the self-accountible, self-reliant person living freely is more responsible for knowing what changes occur and make the necessary changes. No longer can individuals sit back ignorant of what goes on politically, socially, economically. He / she must do her homework and see the sings, build intuition, gut instinct and through personal revelation see the adjustments, make the preparations, listen to the experts, and do the homework, do the work, he / she must to survive. We can't rely on the government, employers, banks, or other institutions. We must take matters into our own hands as the revolutionaries of this great country had to so long ago. Peace to you and yours on the celebrating of this country's greatest day.Jeff,I appreciate your input but why should those who planned as you suggested, saved and infested wisely be penalized for doing the right thing. It is a shame that because of economic times that those who planned for their futures can't earn the interest on their hard earned money in the banks and that we are expected to pay for the sins of others. I still say that those who knew that they couldn't afford to buy a home should have not been able to get the mortgages and that the greed of mortgage companies and loan offices of the banks only saw dollar signs on a booming house market. For everyone to pay the price is wrong!Iris S. TaubParkland, Florida
