Summer of 1966, My First Job As A Mother's Helper!

In the summer of 1966, at the ripe old age of fourteen, I had my first full time job!

I lived in an apartment complex in Flushing Queens, and a young couple in my building was looking for a Mother's Helper for the summer to care for their two young boys.

I had babysat for them occasionally on a Saturday night but never worked for them or anyone else for that matter full time.

The job was a perfect fit.  I knew the young boys well, and it involved working five days a week, Monday through Friday, from nine to five!  The best part of the job was that I was going to go with them to a beach club that they had joined for the summer and the thought of being able to watch the boys and cool off at the same time during those hot and muggy summers was a perfect fit!

The summer seemed to fly by so quickly and although I enjoyed working for them during the summer after a long day of sun and running after two active boys, I was exhausted by the time we were on our way home from the beach club.

It was a very valuable lesson in teaching me the value of earning a dollar and being responsible for watching children and what was involved with keeping them safe and caring for them on a daily basis!
