Reflections on Christmas Past!

This time of year always brings me back to the early 60's.  Although I was Jewish by birth, my Dad always believed that Santa was for every child throughout the world and although we didn't have a tree in our home, he made sure he hired someone each year to decorate the four huge pine trees in our front yard with lots of blinking colorful lights and each Christmas Eve, I would go to bed early and wait to hear the sounds of Santa's sleigh bells.

When my parents were asleep, I would wake up in the middle of the night and walk into the living room that was filled with toys and would play with my new treasures for hours into the morning and although I was quite exhausted from the excitement of being up literally most of the night, it was a tradition that went on for years!

One year, my Dad decided to line up the toys outside of my bedroom and I remember trying to sneak out of the bedroom to hear the sound of toys falling to the ground.  Luckily, it didn't wake up anyone in the house so even though my traditional place where Santa usually placed my toys was changed, my tradition of getting up and playing all night had not.  This went on until 1964 when my Dad died from complications of a heart attack and stroke.

Now nearly fifty years later, the inner child in me, seems to emerge this time of year and that same anticipation and excitement moves me but with a different twist.  I now see that same thrill on the faces of my four grandchildren when I give them their presents on Christmas Eve.

I know that Dad is smiling as well and knows that Santa will always be a big part of our lives!

I hope that my grandchildren will also reflect on this wonderful time of year and pass down the tradition that I still hold so dear!

Merry Christmas to all!
